Coronavirus Email and Donation Scams

Security and Scams

With the current state of the Coronavirus, there are already scams trying to get donations and sending spam emails.

Opening a spam email installs malware to get sensitive information off of your computer. Keep an eye out for email subjects like “How to protect yourself from COVID-19.” With people worrying about how to protect themselves, this is an easy way for the bad guys to get into your computer.

Here are a couple of ways that we can protect ourselves, our members, and our families:

  • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails and be wary of email attachments.
  • Use trusted sources—such as legitimate, government websites for up-to-date, fact-based information about the coronavirus.
  • Do not reveal personal or financial information in emails, and do not respond to email solicitations for this information.
  • Verify a charity’s authenticity by checking the Federal Trade Commission website before making donations.

As of March 24th, the FBI and FCC also warn of additional coronavirus scams.  Check out the video by Good Morning America for further details.
