Stay Safe from Scams in the New Year

Security and Scams

Fraudsters don’t take holidays off—and scams are getting more sophisticated. The best defense is a simple plan: pause, verify, secure, and report. We are here to help you stay safe from scams in the new year. Below are the key threats we’re seeing, what they look like, and exactly what to do if you or someone you love is targeted.

Top Scams to Watch
  1. Phishing & Smishing: Fake emails or texts asking you to click links or share info. Do not click – go directly to the official app or website instead.
  2. Payment App Scams: Never send money via Zelle® or similar apps to strangers. P2P is for people you know and trust.
  3. Fake Tech Support & Government Calls: A “support agent” or “official” claims there’s malware, debt, or legal trouble and pressure you to act fast by paying via wire, crypto, or gift cards – all major red flags.
  4. Social Media & Marketplace Cons: If it feels rushed or “too good to be true,” it probably is.

Your 10-minute “New Year Security Reset”
  • Step 1 — Turn on strong authentication everywhere. Enable multi‑factor authentication (MFA) on banking, email, and social accounts; set transaction alerts in your Directions Credit Union accounts.
  • Step 2 — Update passwords & your recovery info. Use long, unique passwords (or a password manager). Don’t reuse your banking password anywhere else, and confirm your phone/email on file so alerts reach you.
  • Step 3 — Freeze your credit (it’s free). A credit freeze at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion blocks new accounts in your name and does not impact your score. An initial fraud alert adds another check for lenders.
  • Step 4 — Lock down public Wi‑Fi & QR codes. Avoid logging in on public Wi‑Fi without a VPN and never scan surprise or unknown QR codes from packages or signs. Type the known URL instead.
  • Step 5 — Clean up your social footprint. Limit who can see your info; scammers use public details to personalize attacks. If a message triggers urgency (“act now or account locked”), pause and verify through official channels.
If You Suspect Fraud:
  • Stop the interaction immediately.
  • Secure your accounts—change passwords, enable MFA.
  • Report it:
  • Call Directions Credit Union right away—we’re here to help.
